Nokia is to equip all its coming navigational units with A-GPS. The technology enables the phones to get a fix considerably faster when it is time to start navigating. Nokia's 6110 Navigator has this feature and by using a software update the Nokia N95 can also get a turbo-charged GPS.
Uppgraderad hittar N95 sin position betydligt snabbare.
The software update that we have mentioned earlier and which is available without charge for the Nokia N95 does not only fix bugs in the phone. It also improves the performance of the GPS drastically. That is clear from our quick test. The phone has simply been equipped with A-PGS making the phone getting a position fix considerably faster than before.
A so-called assisted GPS speeds up the time it gets to get the position on screen when starting up the GPS unit. To get a fix, the unit usually has to wait for information from four different satellites, and with the data rates from the satellites that usually takes at least 24 seconds. With Assisted GPS some of this information can be stored and transfered via the mobile network considerably faster. The the gPS only needs to identify the satellites to get the current position and thereby saves time.
In a press statement Nokia says it is not only available on the N95 and the 6110 Navigator, but that it will equip all coming navigational units with this technology. The upgrade to Nokia's N95 is available for download on Nokia's website.
