First impression: Nokia 6120 Classic

6120 Classic is Nokia's new budget smartphone. Turbo 3G and Symbian Series 60 in a lean package at a reasonable price. Does the phone live up to its promises? Mobil Magazine is testing the phone right now.

Products with the label ”Classic” always make me suspicious. Car and computer manufacturers usually stick the Classic label on products to be able to sell something that is a year old without having to reduce its price. Luckily, the Nokia 6120 Classic is not an old product in a new shape - instead it is the shape of it that could be called classic, but almost verging on being uninteresting. The 6120 is definitely not a designer product. The format is lean and the mobile 15 mm thin. It slides easily into my pocket, but does not set any new records.

The cover is made out of quite thin plastic in black and silver. The perception of quality is quite good thanks to the keypad being of fairly high quality, but at the same time I get the feeling that this is a mobile that would not handle a violent personal encounter with a stone floor that well… Apart from the usual numerical keys, there are six function keys below the screen, a touch pad, switches and buttons for camera and volume. I miss the button with the pen that is usually available on Nokia smartphones - it is practical to handle copy and pastes and to mark selections in lists.

To open mobile sites work very well on the great QVGA screen. The image is sharp and bright and according to the specifications, it has 16 million colours, but the difference compared to a good TFT screen with fewer colours feels minimal.

The camera is simple with two megapixel and fixed focus. The photo light consisting of leds gives a quite decent light reaching a meter or so. There is also the possibility to record video clips and outdoors the quality is medium with QVGA resolution and 15 frames per second.

The music player is of good quality, but we also note that the phone is available without a memory card and with simpler stereo phones than in Nokia's and Sony Ericsson's music phones.
