Motorola officially dropped from second place
2007-08-03 00:02
When all larger mobile manufacturers now have presented their quarterly reports, it is clear that Nokia is greater than ever with 38 percent of the market, while Motorola has lost its second place to Samsung. All in all the five large manufacturers have 81 percent of the total market.
All of the majors sold considerably more phones during the second quarter compared to last year. The glaring exception is Motorola, having lost nearly a third of its mobile sales.
Motorola's market share has been snatched by Nokia and Sony Ericsson. Motorola's drop has made Samsung advance to the second place in market share.
There is also less available space for other manufacturers than the five majors. Together they had 81 percent of the world market during the second quarter 2007, compared to 79 percent last year.
Even if Motorola is having a rough time in the US, the competition is not coming from Nokia, which decreases in the US. Out of the 100.8 million unit sold during the second quarter, only a fraction, 4.1 million, were sold in Northern America. That, however, is 21.2 percent lower than the same period last year. It is the only market Nokia is losing customers on.
The figure indicates position, second quarter sales 2007 (2006) and market share 2007 (2006).

”The moment you think that things are really going great, then it is high time for change”. The words are adapted from Motorola boss Ed Zanders. If only he and Motorola had lived by this wise idea, perhaps it did not have to be a mobile manufacturer in crisis. It should have had that change years ago.
