Nokia has started to take back more than 46 million batteries to mobile phones after it has become known that they can be overheated, swell up and short circuit the phone. Matsushita has now taken full responsibility and will take the costs associated with all the batteries being returned.

It is batteries of the type BL.-5C manufactured between December 2005 and November 2006 that have the problem. That type of battery is used in a large number of Nokia phones (see facts). Anyone with a defect battery is encouraged to report it and get a new battery via mail.

The model of the battery is on the side you see when you open the phone. To be able to judge if you have one of the defect batteris, go to www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement and enter the serial number found on the backside of the battery. If you have a battery developed between December 2005 and November 2006, enter your name and address on the web page and have a new battery delivered. It is however up to you if you want to do it.
