Nokia improves free map program

Nokia's mobile navigation application has been extended with new functions and the program to download map material has been sped up

Today Nokia releases a new version of the the Nokia Maps software, including a set of new features. Among other things, the search capabilities have been improved for finding hotels, restaurants and shops within a specified area. Nokia has also made a more detailed categorization. New is also the data counter. By using this, it is possible to track how much data has been downloaded, which might prevent unexpectedly high phone bills.

In the map view, there is also an indication telling the user if there is a valid satellite fix or not.

Nokia has also updated Map Loader, a pc software with which maps can be downloaded in advance, to be transfered to the mobile later. According to Nokia the transfer to the phone will be up to 10 times as fast using the new version of Map Loader.

Using Nokia Maps is free of charge. But the free version of the software can not be compared to a regular GPS program in that it only contains simple functions to plan a route. To get driver's directions, you will need a navigational licence. It can be purchased for time periods of up to three years. A licence valid for one year is 59,99 euros. When downloading the new version of Nokia Maps, three days of navigation is included without any additional cost.
