Deafs want better 3G mobiles
September 14, 2007
A group consisting of deaf, hearing-impaired as well as deaf and blind mobile users has evaluated a number of 3G phones on their suitability for video calls. The results show that there are many things the manufacturers could do to satisfy these groups better.
The Nec e616 was used as a reference phone.
The test was done by the Swedish Handicap Institute, the National Post and Telecom Agency in Sweden, PTS, and the Swedish Consumer Agency. In addition to evaluating how well a video call was performed, the phones were also evaluated based on how well they worked together with hearing aids and speech synthesis.
The tested phones were Sony Ericsson Z610, Nokia N73, Samsung Z150, LG U890, Motorola V3xx, Samsung Z240 and LG U300.
For two persons to be able to communicate freely in sign language the panel wants the video call images to get a higher resolution and that the number of frames per second is increased. In addition, sound and image are not adequately synchronized. The group also asks for a standardized interface for headsets to make it easier to connect to different kinds of hearing aid equipment.
As a first step, the participants in the survey ask manufacturers and operators to improve the information about their phones so that it is clear which phones are suitable for video calls and can be used by visually impaired, as well as to bring instructions to connect to hearing equipment.
