Nokia promises unlimited music download
December 04, 2007
In Nokia's new service ”Comes with music” users will have access to millions of songs, and they get to keep the songs downloaded without having to renew subscriptions.
Tommi Mustonen, head of Nokia Music Jonas Kämpe
During next year Nokia will start selling mobile where a year's access to a very large number of songs will be available for download without additional cost for a year. It is not clear how many songs or what companies will deliver the music, but Nokia states that it will be “millions of songs” and Universal Music is one of the companies Nokia will co-operate with.
If you have the stamina, it will theoretically be possible to download all songs that are offered by Nokia under the Comes with music service. Nokia will not apply any rules on “irregular use” or similar, known to be an issue with other mobile operators.
- Unlimited is unlimited, says Anna Svensson at Nokia to Mobil Magazine.
The music that has been downloaded can only be played on the mobile phone used to register for the service. It is possible to change the files to a new device, but the number of switches is limited to three during the first year.
A year after purchase, it will be possible to prolong the subscription in some way, but pricing or other details for that have been set yet.
What do record companies earn from giving away music like this? - They are of course not giving it away for free, but I cannot comment on what our business agreement with them looks like.
When Mobil Magazine's Jonas Kämpe today at the Nokia World fair in Amsterdam spoke to Tommi Mustonen, responsible for Nokia's music business, he admitted that the music will be DRM protected using the Windows media format WMA. The founder of Itunes and Apple, Steve Jobs, has been known to have stated that DRM free songs sell up to ten times better than DRM protected songs, an experience Apple has drawn from its Itunes online music shop.
Answering to the question on how to compete with Itunes, Tommi gives a number of reasons. He means that Nokia has had a focus on mobile music for a long time, and that the company has a deep understanding for consumers and good experiences. One of the major reasons for Nokia to reach success is simply the sheer size of the company, and the enormous market share the company currently holds. With that comes a well-known brand, which will make customers trust the company.
- Nokia is, for instance, according to surveys, the most trusted brand in Asia, says Tommi Mustonen.
He states that one will continue looking for local music and local partners to find more music.
When asked if these new services do not demand cheaper wireless connections, Tommi answers that it can be handled in different ways. - More and more operators offer flat rate, but I would have wished that it was happing faster - but it is happening.
Nokia co-operates with operators, and today announced a new agreement with Telecom Italia, TIM, in addition to existing partnerships with Vodaphone and Telefonica.
According to Nokia's research, most users still download the music to their desktops, and then transfer songs to the mobile. He also means that it could be solved by adding songs to a personal “wishlist”, and then download the songs on the list when a cheap connection is available.
