Mobile adapts to where you are
December 27, 2007
When you come to or when you are leaving a certain place, the mobile might change profile, send a text message, activate bluetooth, or start an application. This using Best GSMNavigator for Nokia's smart mobiles.
To have the mobile automatically switch to silent mode when coming to work or to school, or make sure the ring signal is extra high when moving about outdoors are only two examples of how to use the Best GSMNavigator. The program really has little to do with navigation in itself, but uses information from the mobile network to determine where the phone is located. Therefore, the positioning is not exact. On the street, just outside the office, the software might believe that you are actually inside the office building at the moment. But if you are not in need of very high precision, it works.
It is the so-called cell id information transmitted by base stations that is used by the program. When started up the first time, you are recommended to use a log function, which will successively build up a list of visited cells and store those together with time stamps. By looking at the list, it is possible to determine what cells are in use at a particular place. After having named a few places and delimited those using the cell names, one can start adding functions tied to each of those places.
The most usable feature is probably allowing for the mobile to automatically switch to another profile when arriving at or leaving a certain place. It is also possible to tell the phone to activate or inactivate Bluetooth as well as start or stop one or several programs.
For parents, it might be practical to have the software send a text message to a pre-programmed phone number when a child is leaving a predetermined area. But that, on the other hand, requires the child not to turn this feature off.
The software works with Nokia's newer Series 60 mobiles. It is possible to download a free test version here. If you want to continue using the program, it is 12.99 euro.
